Marketing Projects & Outreach

Outlook on Marketing & Outreach

Curious City believes fiercely that children need books and stories to grow into imaginative, curious citizens.  Curious City believes that once the goal of publication is met, all creative efforts should move to finding readers and users of that swell publication.

Curious City devises unique marketing projects and outreach that facilitate the discovery of books.  Curious City has no set marketing plans for authors, illustrators, or publishers (referred to here as creators).  Each project is built from scratch on the basis of the book’s content or story and the creator’s budget.

Yes, but what does all that look like in reality?
Browse through the categories of projects we have listed below and see some of our applications of story to marketing projects to discovery.

How does Curious City start with a new creator?
We always start with the book itself.  Our ideas flow from content.  After contacting us, creators send us their book (or F&G, galley, or manuscript under contract).  We devour the book couchside (at no fee) and schedule a phone call with the creator.

During that phone call, Curious City throws out some ideas specific to the book and offers up some examples of where that approach has worked in the past.  The first 1/2 hour of that call is free.  If the ideas sound good and the creator wants to work with us, we flesh out the idea with estimates attached.  If the creator does not like the ideas, nothing is lost (and the creator agrees not to slink away with our ideas and do them on their own.)  If the ideas are a smash, but the creator wants to use them on their own, Curious City simply bills for the time to create the idea.

What kind of creators / clients does Curious City like to work with?
We like to work with people who are engaged with the marketing of their books.  As we work on a project basis rather than on a retainer, Curious City likes the project to be an ongoing conversation and not an assignment.

How much does Curious City charge?
Curious City charges $100 an hour.  Project costs are always closely estimated before starting.  There is no minimum time requirement.  Some creators hire us for an hour brainstorm and some hire us for yearlong projects.
