Giveaways
Books need a bit of a hullabaloo to get started. Curious City can cause a bit of said hullabaloo by holding humorous or compelling theme-based giveaways and contests to librarians, bloggers, or theme-based readers. This is as simple as an email outreach though listserves or as complex as the creation of a giveaway web page with broader outreach.

The feisty character in Charlotte Agell‘s The Accidental Adventures of India McAllister has a gay dad and a breast cancer survivor mum who have adopted her from China. We quite agreed with Publishers Weekly’s comment,“…what gives this book strength and validity is that these topics are never discussed; they are simply part of India’s quotidian existence, presented in her authentic voice…” That “strength and validity” led us to reach out with review copies to GLBTQ parent organizations, breast cancer survivor bloggers, and Chinese adoptive parents to let them know that there was a new book that potentially reflected their family’s story.

Every school year begins with the old refresher on fire safety. Curious City greeted 17,000 returning school librarians with an opportunity to win a copy of Jamie Harper’s Miss Mingo and the Fire Drill. While only 25 could receive a copy courtesy of Candlewick Press, the rest were offered a free downloadable activity kit that we developed. A pink flamingo teacher and a classroom of animal misfits might just be a nice break from the old dalmatian…
